WORSHOP
DATES: TUESDAYS AND/OR SATURDAYS. 1st JULY- 31 October 2008:
12 weekly sessions Tuesdays 4.00pm -6.00pm and 2 weekend Saturday sessions
1 July - 25 August Tuesdays as well as 2 wrap up sessions in October,
during the
4th Cape Town Month of Photography festival, MoP4.
Workshop Venue: Iliso Labantu studios, Commercial street Cape Town.
WORKSHOP
TITLE: Photography Untranslated
Demystifying photographic language and looking at the direct and practical
visual elements that make up this medium. A hard working work ethic will
be promoted and a conscientising of the photographer towards considering
the subject's rights, honor and personal space more carefully.
AIM OF WORKSHOP: Generating awareness of personal and general reasons
for making photography one's medium, with a view to establishing an understanding
of one's intuitive and conscious reasons for taking on this medium. Integrity
and ethical considerations around being a photographer will be discoursed.

Duration: 5 Sessions: Thurs: August 7, 15, 22, 29, and September

Time: 17h30 - 20h00
Venues: THE PHOTOBLOCK 46 Orange Street, Corner of Orange and Beckham
Streets. Also an evening at a hiring place, and one at a studio.
Participation prerequisites: Participants to have had some training
and/or experience in photography. Participants to understand photography
and be skilled in general photographic technical and creative practice.
Participants to have high work ethic and conduct. Participants to have
an interest in Studio and Commercial advertising and becoming an assistant
to photographers in the commercial field.

Outline
The 5 week
course offers a grounding to enable the participant to understand more
about the Cape Town Photographic industry and photographic assisting within
it. Participants will be able to recognize and familiarize themselves
with studio equipment, accessories, procedures, terminology and the expectations
of the photographer they would be assisting. The participants will visit
professional equipment and hiring facilities and 2 professional commercial
studios. Participants will receive a basic introduction to digital capture
systems used in studio environments: DPP, Lightroom and Capure One.
Purpose:
To prepare those individuals who have had photographic tuition and experience
and who would like to work in a photographic commercial studio either
seasonally or as a career choice.
By the
end of the course participants will have received a list of:
- Accessories
and items needed in a Professional Assistant's Kit and gone through
in session.
- Professional
photographers currently working in Cape Town.
- Studios
in Cape Town.
- Equipment
rental companies in Cape Town.
- Equipment
and accessories commonly used in the studio and/or worked with in the
course.
Advanced
Digital Workshop with Robb Anderson
Starting
on Wednesday 30th July, and running through August to the 10th September,
2008, Robb Anderson will run a 5 week course addressing the hot-topics
and critical path processes of the modern photographer, covering the basics
of Colour Management, Image Management, Digital Processing and Corrections,
Photoshop Retouching Basics and Image Output.
5 Wednesday Evenings from 6-8pm, from July 30th - 10th September 2008,
skipping the 1st Wednesday in August, (6th ) and the 1st Wednesday in
September, (10th).

ELIGIBILITY: Participants
should already have a basic understanding and knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop
and or some previous experience with digital capture systems used in photographic
contexts.
Upcoming
Workshop Projects July 2008 onwards:
The
Open School, Soweto.
Mdledle, hopes to mentor 8-10 young adults/ older children in a series
of workshop sessions in Pimville, Soweto where he lives, in December,
January.
The sessions will begin with visual literacy walkabouts of exhibitions
in the Gauteng area and group discussion of the issues, techniques and
concepts generated by photographs they come across. The series will cover
lessons on basic framing and composition, simple exposure principles,
self expression through visual language and an introduction to the world
of photography in our country. Billboards, street windows, newspapers,
magazines, books and Internet sites will be accessed as supporting resource
material for photographs and texts to analyze.
The SA Centre for Photography, in partnership with Mdledle is intent on
finding a communal area in Pimville, by November 2008.
