MOP5, The Cape Town Month of Photography, with its theme and Title, Autobiography: Chronicles of Our Times ♣ OPENED ON THE 27th September 2012, with a huge celebration on over 350 people even the pouring rain. The energetic crowd mirrored the overwhelming response this year to the call for submissions. Distell, the sponsor of our cocktail bar kept the guests in high spirits with their signature DESIGN cocktails. The Arts and Culture consumers and producers lapped up the works on view at the Castle, which alone had a showcase of 25 bodies of work in 3 venues, including 45 photographers in solo and group components.The festival’s 5th edition in 2012 has encompassed the work of over 150 photographers, in solo and group shows. The work exhibited ranges from photographic print to installation and moving images. These were accepted from the submissions sent in, to showcase in this celebration of photography as a medium of personal and artistic expression, social engagement; political comment, philosophical discourse as well as aesthetic and entertainment value.
The formal GRAND Opening celebrated the South African Centre’s partnership for MOP5 Bienale this year. These include all the Galleries, public museums and private city upmarket venues who have come on board to share their spaces, as well as the commercial outlets who have sponsored photographers, prizes and our collector’s item catalogue. It also includes the honouring of all the photographers on MOP5, congratulating and celebrating the fruition of their proposals and the flowering of their final productions in the festival arena, all over the city. The event acknowledges the essential festival support that facilitates such a grand showcase.
The opening Speaker, Zayd Minty, welcomed the Festival into the city’s inner circle of valued cultural multi-faceted events and encouraged a more significant partnership with tourism on a more formal global commercial platform. He also challenged the festival to transpire slightly earlier into the year, to showcase in Winter – in order to Bridge the quieter gap months of the visitors to the country. MOP6 has decided to take this into consideration and showcase August 2014. The festival title of the 2014 Cape Town Month of Photography, MOP6, is Designing Destiny.

more prizes from Orms, Cameraland, Olympus, Sigma, Sunshine Company and Studio 22.
